2001...

On the path of the centennial

On the 1st of July 2006 Sporting commemorated its first century of existence. Benefiting from the new sporting structures and facilities the modernisation that was taking place, Sporting was able to face the modern challenges of sport on the national and international level - challenges in which the Club will continue to face with a cycle of constant maintenance, as the spectacle of sport gains ever more popularity.

Sporting entered as the lion that it always is into the new century, demonstrating that the modernisation of the Club was already demonstrating real results.

In football, though below initial expectations, the Club conquered the supercup and, in realising the ambitions of the professional management of the Club, prepared for the construction of a new training centre in Alcochete. The handball team also returned the National title to Sporting after 15 years of absence.

The athletes of Sporting continued to win on the national level (number 40 for the men and number 32 for the women); giving the Club a World Champion (Rui Silva in the 1500 metres on the indoor track) and one more World bronze medal (Carlos Calado in long jump).

Futsal entered as Champion in the new century, as did the table tennis team: now having accumulated 26 titles. Sporting further confirmed its potency on the national level in athletics, handball, futsal and table tennis. The female swimming team also won Sporting's first National Championship in the team variant of the sport.
The time in which Sport Club de Belas played its first game of football, in Seteais, in the presence of King D. Carlos, was now 100 years ago. Today all that is related to competitive sport is very different, as shirt models, materials and sports businesses have all evolved.

There are things, however, that never change: The primacy of green and white, the rampant lion, the winning spirit of all Sportinguistas, athletes members and fans, and the love for the shirt, still exists today and will forever.
