The Lions of Portugal

The association of Sportinguista solidarity, THE LIONS OF PORTUGAL, IPSS is a unique institution of solidarity in Europe and perhaps the world, aimed at members of a sports club.

Founded in 1984 by a group of members of the Club, it was recognised as a Private Institution of Social Solidarity and a Collective of People of Public Utility in 1997.
 
Its mission is to promote various activities for the benefit of members of the Club and their families.

The membership of the institution is around 700.

Retired members have provided for them a Day Centre ('Centro de Dia'), in Estádio José Alvalade, in the form of a pleasant area with a diverse range of services and activities promoted by Sporting Clube de Portugal, including:

 Therapeutic Gymnastics;
 Handcraft workshops;
 Monthly walks throughout Lisbon and its surroundings;
 Various festivals in collaboration with the local council of Lumiar;
 Possibility to participate in monthly tours of the area of Lumiar;
 Possibility to assist with the games of Liga Bwin, provided by Sporting through the Sporting Solidarity project;
 Psychosocial Support..

Some activities take place in the institution every year, such as:

 Excursions for members at reduced prices;
 Allocation of study scholarships to student members of the Club, having already delivered between 1985 and 2007 406 study scholarships, who delivery is performed at the Gala dinner held to commemorate the anniversary of the institution;
 Christmas lunch, offered by the institution to its members and includes various personalities and artists for entertainment..

Where possible, the institution holds the Beneficiary gala also with the participation of artists, the last of which as held on July 2007 in homage to Prof. Moniz Pereira, with the presence of various personalities from the world of music.
