Pescadores, 1-Sporting, 4: The Lions go marching on

Sporting has overturned Pescadores da Costa de Caparica by a margin of 4 goals to 1, in the 4th round of the Portuguese Cup, in a game in which Carlos Carvalhal took charge for the first time.

The Lions of Lisbon started the game in a 4x3x3 formation, with Carvalhal giving a start to Polga along side Tonel, at the heart of defence, in place of the suspended Daniel Carriço. The Sporting backline was completed by Abel and Grimi on the flanks. Pereirinha, João Moutinho and Miguel Veloso occupied the middle of the park, while Matias Fernandez, Liedson and Vukcevic spear-headed the attack.

The fisherman from the opposite side of the Tagus, under the command of Élio Santos, arrived to Restelo on the back of a 20-match unbeaten streak and were determined to put on a battling display. It was, infact, Pescadores who opened the night’s scoring; thanks to a 21st minute effort from Tó-Zé. The forward fought hard for possession in the centre of the field, before breaking forward to put a long range effort out of reach of Rui Patrício. Despite the Caparica goalkeeper, Nuno Madureira, being put under near constant bombardment: the half-time scoreboard read 1-0.

The second-half, however, was a different story. Miguel Veloso levelled the game at 1-a-piece after 51 minutes with a superb free-kick. The Lions took the lead on 56 minutes as João Moutinho scored from the penalty spot following a foul on Liedson by Adérito Gonçalves.

In putting the game beyond Pescadores, Miguel Veloso struck again on 63 minutes. The midfield all-rounder found himself in space inside the 18-yard box and wasted little time in slotting a right footed effort to Nuno Madureira‘s far post. Liedson completed a sensational 20 minutes for Sporting, as the talismanic forward latched onto the end of a Vukcevic cross and sent the keeper the wrong way with a shot back across goal.

Following a quick-fired 4 goals, the game was well and truly under Sporting’s spell. However, Tonel was given his marching orders on 78 minutes for bringing down Serginho. Sporting continued to control the game, even with 10 men, with a determined Caparica battling to the end.
