Iuri: ‘Millions want to be here’
With a NextGen clash with Inter Milan just around the corner, the Official Sporting Website will be bringing you daily exclusives from Sporting's youth side.

Today we sat down with Sporting sensation, Iuri Medeiros. The youngster may have left his native home of Azores to apply his trade at the Sporting/Puma Academy, but Iuri highlighted that the pride that putting on the famous green and white shirt brings was impossible to resist.

What does it mean to play for Sporting in Europe?
For me, it is always an honour to wear the Sporting shirt, be that in Europe or in the league. I would say though that it is extra special to represent the Club in this competition.

Why is the NextGen Series so important?
It is considered as the Champions League for youth teams. A lot of clubs, journalists and plays are watching us and it is great to experience playing against foreign teams. Along with that, it is another competition that gives us the chance to rack up experience as players.

What would you say you have already done for Sporting?
When I was 10 I left my home in the Azores to move to the Academy. It was hard and I am far away from my family and friends, but it got easier with time. I am really to proud to be in a place where millions want to be. For Sporting I work hard everyday to make sure that I am in the best shape possible.

What has been your most memorable moment so far in a Sporting shirt?
Playing for the senior team in Angola. It was a dream of mine to make my debut for the professional team and it was an unforgettable experience. Apart from the result, it was great to play alongside Diego Capel and now I am working hard for another chance.

What do the fans mean to the team?
We are making history. We finished the group stages undefeated and now we want to be in the final. Sporting's fans have been with us all the way in the NextGen Series and a lot of them will be in Leiria as well. We want to beat Inter Milan and to do that we need everyone's help. People are always messaging me on Facebook giving me encouragement.

Why is the Sporting/Puma Academy so important?
It has everything that we need to become professionals. A lot of great players like Cristiano Ronaldo were trained there and it is a great place to grow in the sport.
