Sporting claimed yet another pre-season win on Thursday night, this time with a 1-0 victory over Nacional in the Rio Maior Municipal Stadium.
In what was Montero’s debut in the starting XI, the team from Alvalade got off to a quick start and was looking particularly threatening down the flanks. Both Carrillo and Chaby were looking particularly menacing, as Nacional struggled to control the mobile pair.
It took just 8 minutes for Montero to get his name on the scoresheet, when the newly arrived striker slotted home after a brilliant cross by Carrillo that was headed back across goal by Chaby.
Sporting continued to press and created chance after chance against a struggling Nacional side, but the game remained at 1-0 at the break.
Marcos Rojo was introduced into the action for the second-half in place of the injured William Carvalho, with Eric Dier moving into the middle of the park.
Carrillo continued to be the instigator of the majority of Sporting’s chances and the young Peruvian almost claimed a deserved goal with an arcing shot in the 59th minute that was denied by the post.
A wealth of substitutions by Leonardo Jardim did little to ease up the pressure for Nacional, with Montero particularly shining as the game progressed. One of the striker’s finer moments came through an impossible looking cross that found Wilson Eduardo at the far post, whose well controlled volley was only stopped by a fine save by Gottardi.
In all likelihood Nacional will not feel hard done by with the evening’s loss, with the team from Madeira’s only clear chance coming in the 89th minute with an effort that ended up wide of the post.
