SPORTING JOURNAL

In reaching an unprecedented 87 years of life, the Sporting Journal is the oldest release of its kind in Europe. This longevity is, without doubt, a source of pride for the Club and all who are involved in its maintenance.

The Journal first came into existence on the 31st of March 1922 (With the first edition designated as the "Sporting Clube de Portugal Bulletin") and has continued to defend the interests of the Club ever since its conception.

With the birth of the Journal, the Board of the Club announced that "The Bulletin does not represent motives of profit and cannot be allowed to be bias". It was in this light that the Board set the price of the Bulletin at two escudos per semester: levying just enough money to cover the price of materials, printing and shipping.

It was in this way that the Journal was given life and on the 1st of March 1922, the 1st edition was released. The original price set by the Board for the Bulletin continued for the next 27 years until 1949 with the introduction of a weekly release priced at 1 escudo per edition. Prices rose relatively in the following years, being set at 1$20 in 1958 and 1$50 in 1969. The Journal currently costs 1 Euro per edition and is distributed to 5000 subscribers and sells around a further 9000 copies per week.

The gradual evolution of the Journal over time has resulted in it becoming a quaint-essential part of the life and soul of Sporting Clube de Portugal.

Currently at the helm of the Journal is Miguel Salema Garção, as director, and Ruben Coelho, as deputy director. Under such guidance the Journal has adopted a newer image as a result of efforts to improve its contents and presentation. The Journal continues to defend the interests of the Club and to act as the most reliable source of information about all of the competitions in which the Club is competing in, under the watchful guidance of the Club's guiding principles of "Effort, Dedication, Devotion and Glory".

The editorial policy of the Sporting Journal is largely geared around the representation of everything that is green and white: the official colours of the Club. In searching for greater levels of quality, the Journal was presented on the 14th of November 2006 as a Journal with a modern dynamic packed full of colour. The new Journal was now more palatable to read as it re-styled itself in the image of its readers that are scattered across many countries such as The United States, Canada, France, Germany, Luxemburg, Belgium, Switzerland, South Africa and the Portuguese speaking nations.
The Journal now forms an integrate part in the lives of many Sporting fans and forms part of their everyday lives.
