IFAB Technical Director David Elleray on the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee

The introduction of new technologies, such as the Video Assistant Referee championed by Sporting CP, was one of the topics of discussion at the Football Talks conference this week. IFAB Technical Director David Elleray was on hand to speak on the topic, explaining some of the decisions which have been taken.

"It is important that we interfere as least as possible but benefit the game as much as possible. This is the future of football and this will be the biggest change ever in the game. We want to eliminate refereeing mistakes and help football. It won't fix everything, but things will be fairer at least", said David Elleray, adding a word on Portuguese football: "Portugal has one of the top leagues in the world and the more countries try out this technology the better chance it has of working. We are happy to see Portugal want to take part in testing."

Pedro Proença at the Football Talks conference to speak about corruption in sport

One of the flags being flown by Sporting CP is for the fight against corruption in sport. That is the same motive that has already took president Bruno de Carvalho to the Portuguese Parliament three times to speak with three different political parties.

Pedro Proença picked up the theme at Football Talks this week, highlighting the role of the sport's governing bodies: "Measures in this area are absolutely fundamental. Football is currently going through a totally different paradigm. The Portuguese Football League and Portuguese Football Federation have been trying to monitor illicit activities that discredit football and that is something that has to be done constantly and continuously. The League and Federation, but also the Players' Syndicate and National Coaches and Referees Associations are looking to develop a programme on this issue."

"Portuguese clubs are capable of competing"

UEFA Director of Competitions Giorgio Marchetti on the Champions League coefficient

The UEFA Director of Competitions, Giorgio Marchetti, and President of the Portuguese Football League, Pedro Proença, were the two speakers invited to take part in the Football Talks conference this week, at the Estoril Congress Centre.

The two speakers spoke about Portugal losing one Champions League place in 2018/2019, with the Italian affirming that Portugal will soon secure a third qualification place once again: "The coefficient system is really dynamic. If Portugal has lost a place then it is because of what the clubs have done in recent seasons. However Portuguese clubs are capable of competing at the highest levels and have what it takes to win that place back."

Pedro Proença highlighted the role of economics, explaining his remedy for recovering a third Champions League place: "The loss is due to dropping a place in the rankings. We have to carry on. This is a country with a population of 10 million and three years ago we had the Troika here, but we cannot disconnect from the football market. Financing is really important in the game today, but we have to work with that by being professional and by using our talent."
