Sporting CP players visit Portuguese Institute of Oncology

By Sporting CP
20 Oct, 2023

The athletes share a morning with the patients on the pediatric ward

Sporting CP footballers Pedro Gonçalves, Daniel Bragança, Tiago Ferreira and Alícia Correia, along with handball player Salvador Salvador, visited the pediatric ward of the Portuguese Institute of Oncology (IPO) in Lisbon, in a social responsibility action promoted by the Sporting Foundation and the IPO itself.

The players brought the young patients hugs, smiles and Sporting Clube de Portugal souvenirs, to encourage them in their fight with illness.

“When we told them that Sporting CP players would be coming here, they were very happy - especially those who are fans of the team", said Cátia Tomás, kindergarten teacher at IPO Lisbon.

"These initiatives always have a very positive effect on the children, healthcare professionals and also caregivers. It's a break from their routine and, often, it's a dream come true, meeting someone they're only used to seeing on television and who is their idol. So being able to be with them is something that always brings a lot of excitement and pleasure”.

“This time, the three points clearly went to the pediatric ward at IPO Lisbon".

Sporting CP wants to get ever closer to the community, at a time in which more and more people need help from others.

“There is the game on the pitch and there is the 'match' outside of it, and we are here to bring those two worlds together. Above all, we want to make the strength of Sporting CP felt within the community”, says Inês Sêco, executive coordinator of the Sporting Foundation.

“Us coming here gives these children great strength. Something that is so little to us means a lot to them. In a way, it helps them to face this situation in a different way”.

For this reason, Sporting CP turned up with five players, and also with Jubas, the club mascot.

“Seeing so many children going through this is difficult. We have to give them some strength, give them confidence in the process and tell them that, like us, it is something that you take day-to-day. You never know what tomorrow will bring, but clearly what we have to do is give them strength", said Pedro Gonçalves.

“This could just be an everyday thing for us, but for them it is a special day because they feel the joy of being able to be with their idols".

“It's important to come here and, from today onwards, you can be sure, they are my idols, because of the strength they have and the way they face life", said the winger.

One of those present, Julinho, welcomed the delegation wearing the Sporting CP shirt, and received the jacket Gonçalves had worn after being handed a shirt signed by the first team.

Women's team player Alícia Correia also spoke after this visit to IPO Lisbon.

“It was a different day not only for them, but also for us. Seeing their joy when they saw us with Jubas was truly priceless and being able to make their journey a little easier makes me very happy”

Long-time Sportinguistas take centre stage in a club event

Sporting Clube de Portugal have a commitment to honouring long-time season ticket holders, and the most recent homage was paid at the Estádio José Alvalade. Around 200 members who have reached the 50-year milestone, plus more than a thousand with 25 years of consecutive membership, were recognised.

Each of them was first welcomed at Praça Centenário, where they could pick up a card and a personalised scarf. The ceremony itself, which took place in the VIP Box, was attended by club President Frederico Varandas.

Here, the members were presented with their respective commemorative badges, with several familiar faces in charge of making the moment even more special. Among them were present day idols such as Bernardo Paçó (futsal), Patrícia Mamona (athletics), Daniela Loureiro (volleyball) and Débora Queiroz (futsal), and legends like athletes Armando Aldegalega and Francis Obikwelu.

In addition to the ceremony, Sporting CP opened the stadium to all honorees and their companions, who were able to visit the Sporting CP Museum and the pitch, plus the first team dressing room.

Sporting Volunteer Day sees employees help Refood do Lumiar

By Sporting CP
21 Jun, 2023

Members of staff work in a kitchen to aid those in need

The latest edition of Sporting Volunteer Day brought together more than three dozen Sporting Clube de Portugal employees in a kitchen to prepare meals for Refood.

Traditionally held on June 19th (19/06, in honour of the club's foundation), the day is used for charity initiatives and to make a difference in the community, organised by the Sporting CP Foundation and the club's Human Resources department.

In previous years, volunteers have collected food, renovated a guest house and cleaned an area of the Tagus Estuary. This time, they put on aprons and cooked meals to help those without food in Lisbon.

Sporting CP has been a partner of Refood do Lumiar for several years, delivering leftover food on match days so that the institution can deliver it to those most in need.

Aware that the meals that Refood have access to are at times not as healthy and balanced as required, Sporting CP nutritionist, Inês Maldonado, prepared a menu consisting of soup and a vegetarian main course with a wide variety of vegetables, legumes and dried fruits.

Sporting CP bought the vegetables at the SEMEAR - BIPP Association for Disability Inclusion -, which received the club's first volunteer action. They chose the Gustave Eiffel Professional School as a partner and it was in the kitchen of this school that the action took place with the help of Ana Matias, coordinator of the cooking and pastry course, and several students in their first year of the course.

“We know that since 2020, with the pandemic, and now with the rising cost of living, more and more people are going to Refood to eat. Therefore, this year we wanted to leave our mark here. We listened to the institution's needs, spoke to our nutrition department and got to work," said Inês Sêco, executive director of the Sporting Foundation, who was pleased with the commitment of all participants in this fourth edition of Sporting Volunteer Day.

“Everybody rolled up their sleeves, got their hands on knives and did a little bit of everything. No one held back on anything. It was very productive."

Ana Matias added that “It went really well. We managed to organise ourselves, everyone collaborated and the final product was very good. In addition to the charity work that was done here, our students were also very motivated by the presence of Sporting CP volunteers because, in addition to being a practical class, it was a different morning with different people,” said the teacher.

Hugo Ferreira, from the Administration Advisory Office, was one of the Sporting CP employees who participated in the initiative.

“It is, without a doubt, an experience to be repeated. I usually do volunteer work abroad and if the club have more of these actions, I will be here to help. I think it's very important to dedicate ourselves to these causes and help others."

At the end of the action, Refood do Lumiar collected the meals that will feed about 150 people, and that will be delivered on the streets of the area of Lisbon next to the Estádio José Alvalade .

“We always need help, not least because there has been a considerable increase in people contacting us to provide them with food support. Right now, unfortunately, we already have people on the waiting list. For this reason, and at a time when we don't have much food to distribute, this action helps us a lot,” said Francisco Amaral, manager of Refood do Lumiar.

"Sporting CP are a a great partner for us and for Alvalade and we really appreciate this contribution."

Sporting CP board re-elected

By Sporting CP

Chairman Frederico Varandas reacts to the vote by club members

The 'Lista A' option was announced as the comprehensive winner in the Sporting Clube de Portugal elections on Saturday. After the results were confirmed, the re-elected Chairman of the Board, Frederico Varandas, hailed the choice by shareholders to opt for continuity.

"Today, stability at Sporting CP won. The members voted for stability. I would like to reiterate that it has been around 40 years since a president at Sporting CP has served a second term. Since then, Sporting CP have entered into a cycle of destructive instability. The win today is so important. It's not a win for the president or the board. It's a win for Sporting CP's stability. A few months ago, I had warned that Sporting CP need to learn to live in stability. We have had four decades of self-destruction that doomed our success," he said.

"We can have the best coaches, youth system, players and organization, but without stability we will not have sporting success. Sporting CP's members showed maturity by choosing stability."

"About three and a half years ago, I remember promising one thing: That we would reach this day and leave Sporting CP in a better position than when we arrived. That mission is accomplished. Today, with close to 86% of the Members voting for our mandate, our mission is the same: To serve Sporting CP.

We will serve you with the same humility and responsibility as when we won with 42% of the votes. There is no greater honour for a Sporting CP member than serving their club. We will serve you, always thinking about the club first. We will continue to work discreetly, without making noise. Our objective today is the same as it was three and a half years ago and I promise the same thing. I don't promise trophies, but I do promise that my team and I will deliver a Sporting CP even better than it is today.

I am very happy that today we have become a healthy, free, independent, winning and united Sporting CP. We are not based around a board or a president, but rather are united around those who matter: Sporting CP".

In response to questions from the media, Varandas underlined that "Sporting CP is a democratic club and is not a regime like North Korea. We respect opinions, we know the difficulties we have gone through and one of the great merits of my team is that we don't fall apart when something goes wrong. We also keep our feet on the ground when we have victories. I've never been too worried about noise from outside. Anyone who's been here knows that you always have to listen to Sporting CP members, who don't always have the information that the board have. Sometimes we have to make decisions that are not popular, but if they are the best for Sporting CP, then we will make them".

"Sporting CP's mission is to enhance what happens on the pitch, which is our core business. Every club is always dependent on results. Our objective is to create the conditions for Sporting CP, as the club's history demands, to fight for trophies. With each passing month, Sporting CP are stronger, more mature and competitive and more respected", he continued.

"What we have to do is make Sporting CP more capable of consistently winning. In these three and a half years, a lot has been done to get closer to our rivals, but these rivals are very strong and enjoy stability. Even today, they have a competitive advantage -albeit much less than they had three and a half years ago".
