"Sporting CP can win anywhere"

Luís Martins highlights the importance of mentality in Ledman LigaPro

Luís Martins will take charge of Sporting CP B for the second time this Sunday, with an encounter against Desportivo das Aves.

Looking to bring to a close a series of 13 games without a win, Martins appealed to his players' mentality: "Playing for Sporting CP means getting out of these situations. Performance is controlled a lot by the psychological side of things. The lads were motivated against Gil Vicente, but it was a bit of a bitter defeat (2-2). We still have 14 matches to go and a lot of points to win to make sure we stay in Ledman LigaPro. We aren't looking at the league table and we have the resources to get out of the situation we are in, without forgetting that the objective of this team is to contribute to the development of our athletes."

Desportivo das Aves stand in his side's way this Sunday (15h00) and are themselves currently sitting in 2nd in the league. Luís Martins didn't shy away from complementing the promotion contenders: "We are two teams with completely different projects. We both need the points, Aves because they are trying to get promoted and us to stay in this league. They are a good side, but Sporting CP can win anywhere."

New Sporting CP B boss Luís Martins on the weekend's Ledman LigaPro action

Luís Martins took charge of Sporting CP B for the first time this weekend, in a tough away visit to Gil Vicente. Although behind on two occasions, a spirited Alvalade slide were able to secure a point.

"We were the most consistent team. We imposed our style of play again and had more possession. However we were penalised from two dead ball situations, which is something that is a constant issue for this group", said the Sporting CP B coach, continuing: "We saw today that every match in this league is hard. The lads have to believe in themselves and that is what they managed to do today."

Luís Martins leads Sporting CP B for the first time, with draw in Gil Vicente

Sporting CP B still haven't quite found their winning form, but the performance against the powerful Gil Vicente was a clear sign of things to come for the side now led by Luís Martins. The Alvalade youngsters dominated possession and led the shot count against the Ledman LigaPro promotion contenders.

Paulinho put Gil Vicente ahead after 11 minutes, before Gelson Dala restored the deadlock six minutes before the break. Hugo Firmino struck from the penalty spot after the break to put the hosts in the lead again, before some battling play saw Rafael Barbosa secure the draw.

We want to turn things around as quickly as we can and winning is our only option", said the Sporting CP B shotstopper, continuing to speak about the recent change of management: "João de Deus going took us by surprise, but the club thought it was the best decision for what we need right now. João de Deus praises work ethic and points to missed opportunities

"We had two chances right in front of the goalkeeper and didn't score", said João de Deus at the final whistle on Wednesday, reflecting on another afternoon of Ledman LigaPro action.

For the Sporting CP keeper, hard work is the only way out: "We just aren't putting away the good chances we are creating. It is upsetting, because I see that the players are working hard. This is a phase and we believe we will get through it."

Understandably frustrated, but not about to throw in the towel. That it how Wednesday's scorer Leonardo Ruiz analysed Sporting CP B's current situation.

"We are all upset with the result. We really did out best", affirmed the Colombian, adding: "We have been putting the work in to win and we are all focused. I am sure that in our next match we will be even better and will win. I am sure we will get out of this situation."

Sporting CP B miss out to Varzim and continue to search for a long awaited three points

Sporting CP B slipped to defeat this Wednesday, with a lack of a more clinical touch in front of goal and the odd individual error allowing Ledman LigaPro highflighers Varzim come away with the three points.

Francisco Geraldes and André Geraldes were introduced to the starting line-up in an effort to boost João de Deus' side to a win that is proving hard to come by, while Leonardo Ruiz was also given a place for the opening whistle. It was actually the Colombian forward who created the first chance on goal, latching on to a cross with a header only to be denied by a superb save from Paulo Vítor.

Down the other end of the park, Varzim were proving more deadly and Malele netted following a set piece after a defensive mix up.

Paulo Victor made another couple of good stops before the break, first after a header from Gelson Dala and then from a shot by Kiki.

The second-half continued with Sporting CP looking for a goal and a much deserved strike finally came from Leonardo Ruiz after he linked up with Francisco Geraldes and Gelson Dala.

However, the deadlock only lasted five minutes, when Rui Costa punished a mistake from Abdu Conté inside the 18-yard box to steal the points for the visitors.

Sporting CP B currently sit just one position off the bottom off the table, with a total of five points.

"We had chances to put the game to bed"

João de Deus frustrated with what is now a run of 10 games without a win

João de Deus was understandably frustrated after seeing his side again miss out on the three point this weekend, despite taking the lead early on.

"The first-half was pretty much what we planned and we had chances to put the game to bed. In the second-half, although we dominated, we were unable to guarantee the three points", said the Sporting CP B coach, going on to add his analysis on the featuring of four under-19 players (Ivanildo Fernandes, Bubacar Djaló, Jovane Cabral and Bruno Paz): "We have to use the best we have, so I brought in some youth players. I am sure they will have more opportunities going forward."

Who also made an appearance was Merih Demiral, making his debut in a Sporting shirt. "He is a good player and you can see that from how he has been playing for Turkey. He already knows how we play and he will contribute to us climbing up the table", finished João de Deus.
