Slimani speaks with The Guardian after half a season with the English champions, Leicester

Islam Slimani spoke in an interview with the British newspaper The Guardian this week, reflecting on his time with Leicester so far and his experience in the Portuguese capital before his big move to the English champions.

"Sporting CP was vital for my career, it was difficult to grow in Algeria. I grew a lot in Sporting CP and it is a club that was really important in my life", said the imposing forward, adding a word on his time in the Premier League so far: "My way of playing fits in with the style in England, but I still need to adapt, particularly in terms of speed. The defenders are really strong and hard here."

"Tougher because we didn't score a second goal"

Jorge Jesus satisfied with his side's performance but is looking for better finishing

A satisfactory performance with some spells of attractive football, despite a frustrating number of wasted chances on goal. That is how Jorge Jesus saw Friday's CTT Cup win against Varzim, which projected his side to the top of Group A.

"The game got tougher because we didn't score a second goal, which would have settled us. When you create chances and don't put them away you leave yourself open to an equaliser", said Jesus at the final whistle, adding: "We are taking things one step at a time and the first thing to do is get through the group stages. We are working hard to turn in the wins and on Wednesday we have to do it again. We want to get to the final."

Adrien Silva was forced off after a heavy tackle in the second-half and Jorge Jesus was unable to give any guarantees: "He took a hard hit around his knee, but I couldn't tell how serious it was. We will look at him again tomorrow."

CTT Cup: Sporting CP, 1-Varzim, 0

Last match of 2016 sees Sporting CP tally three more points in this season's League Cup campaign

Sporting Clube de Portugal took control of CTT Cup Group A with a 1-0 win against a stubborn Varzim side this Friday night, courtesy of a 19th minute strike from Gelson Martins.

Jorge Jesus started the encounter with Luc Castaignos and Bas Dost leading the attack, while Gelson Martins dropped out right and Joel Campbell roamed down the left, leaving Adrien Silva and William Carvalho to occupy the heart of midfield. Sporting CP's setup actually fitted in well with the lower league visitors' 4x3x3 formation and both sides were able to play open football for extensive periods. The difference on the night was an unstoppable strike from Gelson Martins, after he burst into the box to link up with Ricardo Esgaio and fire a shot into the roof of the net.

Despite the narrow result, Sporting CP dominated for the full 90 minutes, limiting Varzim to just a handful of attacks and giving Beto an easy night between the Alvalade posts.

First-half penalty from Rui Miguel keeps the points in Coimbra

João de Deus' side were presented with the difficult task of a trip to Coimbra to face Académica this Friday, on Ledman LigaPro matchday 20. A first-half penalty conceded by Ivanildo Fernandes and converted by Rui Miguel was all that split the sides at the final whistle.

Pedro Silva was the outstanding performer for a Sporting CP B who were unable to get a solid foothold. Making some fine saves in the the 21st, 30th and 38th minute, the Alvalade keeper was unfortuantely only able to delay Académica's scent for goal and the hosts finally broke through a few minutes before the break, when Rui Miguel converted from the penalty spot.

Ronaldo Tavares had a chance before the break to respond, but his shot finished off target after some good play from Bilel.

Credit to Académica in the second-half, who were able to smoother Sporting CP's attempts to get onto the scoreboard after the restart. Ronaldo Tavares tried his luck with a header in the 52nd minute, but was unable to threaten Ricardo's goal, before Kiki came just inches away from equalising after a corner whipped in by Pedro Delgado.

The result leaves Sporting CP B in 13th place, with 25 points.

“It is really important that we win tomorrow"

Jorge Jesus looks ahead to Friday's CTT Cup encounter

Jorge Jesus was with the press his Thursday, ahead of the week's CTT Cup Group A matchday 2 hosting of Varzim.

Unsurprisingly, the Alvalade coach is setting the bar high and looking to trigger a run to the final. "Tomorrow we will be playing a match in a competition which Sporting CP has never won. This year, our objective is to get to the final and to do that we have to get past the group stages and beat Varzim. The lower league sides always have big dreams in these competitions and that brings extra motivation. We are ready for a really competitive match, in which we might have to go through some tough spells. I am feeling really good after the Christmas break and tomorrow that will show", said Jesus, going on to reveal how he has prepared his squad for the encounter: "We are the only two teams in the group to have won. It is really important that we win tomorrow and we have prepared to do that. We have had the Christmas break, so we haven't had a lot of time to train, but neither have our opponents. We will put out one of our normal sides and we will be going for the win."
