Fábio Santos wins WUKF Karate gold

Alvalade athlete tops podium after six wins

Just a day after contributing to Sporting CP's bronze medal in the team competition, Fábio Santos topped the individual podium in the WUKF Karate European Championship in podium.

Santos beat his Bosnian, Italian, Romanian, Irish and English competitors, before again beating the Romanian in the final.

Rafael Fernandes, Diogo Carvalho and Fábio Santos claim podium spot

Sporting CP's karate starlets claimed a fantastic bronze medal at the WUKF Karate European Championships this week in Romania.

Rafael Fernandes, Diogo Carvalho and Fábio Santos opened with wins against the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Ireland, before missing out to England.

Alvalade coach and athlete beats home favourite in the final

Nuno Paiva rounded off a fantastic week for Sporting's athletes this Sunday, winning the over-35 event at the International Karate Union's European Championships, being held in the Romanian city of Timisora. Paiva actually beat the home favourite Kornya Csaba in the decisive encounter to claim gold.

Speaking with the Sporting Journal after the event, Paiva said he "felt good during the whole fight" and is looking forward to the World Championships in Ireland next year.

Sporting karate claims two silvers in Battle of the Teams

Alvalade seniors and under-21 sides on form in Rotterdam

Sporting's karate teams took part in the prestigious Battle of the Teams competition this weekend, coming away with two silver medals.

In the senior event, the team comprised of Henrique Farinha, Hugo Pina and Rodrigo Pina reached the final after beating the Dutch side Choku Heren (Ceylan, Delhez, Manhoef and Nortan) and the Belgians Cika Belgium 4 (Custinne, Dasoul and Grilli). In the decisive bout, Sporting missed out to the Dutch outfit KBN Team (Sheppard, Smaal and Wold).

The other Alvalade contingent, comprised of Filipe Reis, Mauro Hernandez and Hélio Hernandez – who actually won the gold last year – finished in fifth after losing against KBN Team.

In the under-21 competition, Sporting started with a win against the German side KDNW Team 9 (Bauer, Dreier, Nkelani Tandu and Tönnis), before beating the Dutch outfit Mossel-Boot (Krisnadath, van Moerkerk, Roovers and Soares) in the semis. In the final encounter, Sporting missed out ot the Belgians Karaté Club Wallonie (Bougrine, Gabriels and Paulussen).

Sporting in Battle of the Teams

Alvalade karate stars battle to reclaim title won last year in the Netherlands

Sporting's karate department will take part in Battle of the Teams 2015 this weekend, being held in the Dutch city of Rotterdam.

In the senior event, Sporting will take on Cika Belgium 4, Team 2 Heren (Belgium), Kaizen Central A, Unity 99 – Kaizen (England), KNB Team and Choku Heren (Netherlands).

In the under-21 competition, Sporting will face opposition from Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and England.

The Alvalade team actually won the tournament in 2014, with a team comprised of Filipe Reis, Hélio Hernandez and Mauro Hernandez.

Nuno Paiva wins in IKU World Championships

Sporting atlhete comes out on top in Veterans A in Slovenia

The Sporting karate coach and athlete Nuno Paiva won the Veterans A competition at the International Karate Union World Championships this weekend.

Paiva beat the French Iquino by a margin of 3-1 in the final, after having won his first fight yesterday in just six seconds.
