“It didn't go well for us today"

Domingos Duarte on Sporting B's 3-1 loss to Sp. Covilhã

"We started badly. We let in a goal and 10 minutes later we let in another one. In the second-half we showed we have a chance to do better in future", said Domingos Duarte after his side's 3-1 loss to Sp. Covilhã this Sunday, finishing: "Our goal lifted us a bit and in the second-half we attacked, but we just couldn't find a second or third goal. We have been working on defending set-pieces, but it didn't go well for us today. It was individual mistakes, but we will get better."

João de Deus reflects on his side's 3-1 loss to Sp. Covilhã

Although accepting that his side is in need of some improvement, Sporting B coach João de Deus is confident that the current spell of negative results will soon come to an end.

“The game was decided by something which has been a real problem for us, by which I mean dead ball situations. Two corners and a free-kick, three goals conceded in the first 20 minutes. Funnily enough, we also scored from a free-kick and there were very few chances from open play. Sp. Covilhã were effective and we couldn't respond well enough", opened João de Deus in an interview with radio journalists at the final whistle, adding: "We tried to improve after the break. We know that when teams score first in II Liga they normally win, but we didn't give up. We will work on things on Monday when the transfer window closes. We have to lift ourselves up now and work with the lads who are here."

‘Leões’ perdem com Sp. Covilhã por 3-1 na 27.ª jornada da II Liga

Sporting B were unable to break their string of recent negative results this weekend, this time coming away from the II Liga matchday 27 hosting of Sp. Covilhã with a 3-1 loss.

The return of Sporting Academy prodigy Betinho to the Sporting B lineup was the highlight of the squad list and it was the forward who created the first chance of the afternoon after just 20 seconds, with a shot from the centre of the area that ended up in Pedro Taborda's hands. The game developed into a captivating encounter, with both sides looking for goal, but it was the visitors who struck first, when Éder Diaz rose highest to a corner in the fifth minute.

Sp. Covilhã followed up on the goal with a dominating display in the midfield for the rest of the half, largely limiting Sporting's efforts going forward and doubling their lead in the 15th minute with another header from a corner. To add insult to injury, Sp. Covilhã stretched their lead further five minutes later, when Tiago Moreira found space at the edge of the area to leave João de Deus' side trailing by three.

From there the encounter settled and possession was largely divided, but Sporting B were struggling to string together passes against well compacted opposition who were doing a fine job of closing out the middle of the park. Zezinho was introduced in place of Fokobo and 10 minutes before the break Sporting B looked to have finally shaken off the early shellshock, with Dramé reducing the deficit to 3-1 with a free-kick guided in at the near post.

The interval worked well to lift the spirits of João de Deus' side and better possession, use of space and pace going forward began to produce opportunities. Dramé was looking particularly likely to do damage, but Sp. Covilhã managed to hold on to the result and take away a three points decided in the first quarter of an hour.

The result leaves Sporting B in 10th place in II Liga, with 36 points.

"It was an absolute embarrassment"

Raul José on Sporting's 3-2 win against Académica

Sporting assistant coach Raul José talked with the press in a flash interview after Saturday's win against Académica, marred by the sending off of Jorge Jesus and Nélson and a blatantly off-side goal.

“We showed that we can take on anyone, but today we had to play against more than one team. The refereeing team were an absolute embarrassment, overruling a correct decision by the linesmen, taking a penalty away from us and not even showing a yello when Arien was clearly attacked. This refereeing team are at a really, really low level. We were clearly disadvantaged and we only won because we have a great team and great fans. We will fish for the title to the end."

Octávio Machado after Sporting's win against Académica

Sporting's director of football, Octávio Machado, was in the Alvalade press room at the final whistle on Saturday to reflect on Saturday's win against Académica and a series of errors made by Cosme Machado.

“Things only aren't worse now because we have a really good team and great fans. It really isn't right that the club with the biggest crowds ends up with the fans going home upset after a win. That isn't what football should be. The criteria for fouls, not giving clear penalties and awarding a clearly off-side goal... I have never seen a linesman, who rightly ruled out a goal, be pressured by the referee to change his mind. honestly I am not happy to say this, but Cosmo Machado is not fit to referee in the top division and I would not like to see Vítor Pereira name him again for a Sporting match. After everything that is happening around the club, we deserve a bit more care when it comes to picking referees", said the Alvalade director, adding a word on the sending off of Jorge Jesus: "When Adrien was shown a yellow card, which was after a foul that should have been a sending off, Jorge Jesus asked the fourth official if the referee had two whistle twice to restart play. Nothing happened for him to be sent off and I would like to know why he was."

"The important thing is that we got the win"

Adrien on his side's 3-2 win against Académica

Adrien put in yet another man of the match performance this Saturday night, inspiring his side to a 3-2 win against Académica in a night that will be remembered largely for its refereeing.

“The most important thing is that we got the win. It could have been more comfortable, but some things happened that we can't control. However, we reacted well. All we have to focus on is applying what we are doing in training", opened the Portuguese international in a flash interview at the final whistle, before responding to a question about Académica's second goal: "I haven't seen it properly, all I saw was the linesman raise his flag. I didn't know what had happened and I went to talk to the referee about it. We really want to say thank you to the fans, because they have been fantastic. There support is really important in this kind of match."

To finish, Adrien reflected on his current form: "I am trying to improve as much as I can and with this coach I can. It is up to you to say if this is the best Adrien or not, all I can do is my best to help the team."
