João Rocha Arena opens doors

The country's most modern sports arena ready to host Sporting CP

The 21st of June 2017, which is curiously exactly 15 years since the opening of the Sporting Academy, will be remembered as the day that the João Rocha Arena officially opened its doors to the public.

The ceremony got underway at 17h00 with the inauguration of the Visconde de Alvalade roundabout (between the arena and the stadium), proudly showing the words of president Bruno de Carvalho: "Talent is needed, but only with hard work, fighting spirit, drive, attitude and dedication to this club's objectives will be be champions."

The ceremony was attended by hundreds of well known Sporting CP personalities and also saw the president of the Lisbon Municipal Council, Fernando Medina, take to the stage to share his thoughts: "We shouldn't be scared to state facts. This is an historic moment for this great institution and for our city. I remember very well the world's best ever hockey team: "Ramalhete, Rendeiro, Sobrinho, Chana and Livramento. The fantasies of every Sporting CP fans are packed full of athletes who have been fundamental across a range of sports. Sporting CP is a massive part of Portuguese sport."

Bruno de Carvalho himself took on the role as presenter, calling up to the stage various people who have played a crucial part in building the arena, including the German architect Andreas Moerschel.

New arena set for a full house for opening

All invitations available for the inauguration of the João Rocha Arena have now been delivered.

The event will get underway at 18h30, with ceremonies organised in the build up for the facility's new football pitches and access roundabout.

Ceremony scheduled for the 21st of June

The João Rocha Arena will officially open its doors on the 21st of June, with an institutional ceremony set to be attended by representatives from right across the Sporting universe.

Guests at the ceremony will include club members and fans who contributed to Mission Pavilion, coaches, athletes, organised fan groups, the Lions of Portugal, the Stromp Group and Sporting Supporters' Clubs from around the world.

New Alvalade facility to open in June

The João Rocha Arena will officially open its doors on the 21st of June 2017.

The brand new facility has a 3,000 seater main court, which will host futsal, roller hockey and handball as of the 2017/18 season.

Fans invited to visit the João Rocha Arena to see how work is progressing

Sporting will open the João Rocha Arena to the fans this Saturday before the I Liga matchday 1 encounter with Marítimo.

The event will be attended by president Bruno de Carvalho and various players, with gathering ahead of the visit taking place next to Gate 2.

Construction is on schedule, ready for next year's opening

It was on the 3rd of August 2015 that work got underway on the João Rocha Arena.

The Sporting Journal has been following progress with a keen eye, sitting down this week with the building site's supervisor to find out more.

"We have finished the structure and facade. You can't tell from outside, but the stands are ready and most of the interior spaces are complete. Everything for water, drains and air conditioning is good to go, so all we are missing is the final covering on the outside. We should be finished by the 30th of December", said Horácio Preto.

The Arena is expected to officially open in March 2017, with a capacity for 3000 seated spectators, a new club store and an extended museum.

Sporting Clube de Portugal statement

In light of false declarations made by an employee of the company Coberlusa, sub-contracted by the general contractor Ferreira BP to work on the construction of the João Rocha Arena, Sporting Clube de Portugal notes the following:

1 – The claim that Sporting Clube de Portugal has any form of debt or has not paid the general contractor for the work, Ferreira BP, is completely false.

2 – Sporting Clube de Portugal has now knowledge whatsoever of any situation relating to the management of the company Ferreira BP.

3 – Sporting Clube de Portugal will now take legal action against the company Coberlusa, with consideration to the damage caused to the image and good name of the club. Sporting Clube de Portugal awaits comment from the companies Lusitana Face and Ferreira BP and will act in conformity.

Site open to the public on the 23rd of March

A year until the inauguration of the new João Rocha Arena, Sporting Clube de Portugal will open the new home of the club's indoor sports for a special session on March the 23rd.

Mission Pavilion, which was launched on the 12th of april 2014, is an initative designed to get Sporting's fans involved in building the new Arena and remodeling the current Multisports Centre.

The João Rocha Arena will cost 9,600,000€ and is completely paid for, while another 163,000€ is needed for the Multisports Centre.

ACCESS REGULATIONS
- Visits are prohibited to push chairs, reduced mobility and other situations incompatible with a visit to a building site;
- Children under the age of 10 (inclusive) can access a reception area, but cannot take part in the visit;
- Shoes for an irregular floor are recommended
