"Alan Ruiz gave us a bit more creativity"

Jorge Jesus praises Bas Dost for battling through injury

Speaking with the press at the final whistle on Sunday after his side's win against Feirense, Jorge Jesus thanked Bas Dost for playing though injury in a match which saw the Dutchman net twice.

"Bas Dost was in doubt right up until the last minute. He didn't train yesterday or today, but he said he would be okay so we used him. He is an excellent professional, but we can't be dependent on him. He needs players to support him, both through the middle and from the wings. Normally my teams don't have such a focus on just one player for goals", said Jesus.

The Sporting CP coach wen on to speak in greater depth about the match and the injury picked up by Adrien: "It was a good first-half, with 45 minutes of really dynamic play. The positioning of Adrien and Alan Ruiz gave us a bit more creativity in the build up. We didn't score a third goal and Feirense managed to find their footing a bit. Adrien isn't just any player, he is a starting midfielder for the European champions. We don't quite win every time he plays, but we did feel a bit fragile after he went off. After that Bryan Ruiz settled things down."

To finish, Jesus reflected on Alan Ruiz's performance: "He has always been a player we were going to invest in, but he came in from Colón, who don't have big objectives. He has come in to a very demanding club and he still doesn't have the capacity to play 90 minutes the way we want, but he is a quality player. His pass for Bas Dost was fantastic."

Double strike from Bas Dost in a deadly showing with Alan Ruiz secures three points against Feirense

Sporting CP beat Feirense 2-1 this Seunday night, courtesy of two goals from Bas Bost that sees the Dutchman become Liga NOS top goalscorer.

Alan Ruiz was given a start and the Argentinean's creativity had Feirense chasing shadows in the early stages. Giving another option in attack, Ruiz's presence also gave extra space to Joel Campbell and Gelson Martins coming in off the wings in support.

Looking to get onto the scoreboard early, it took Sporting CP just five minutes to find the back of the net. Bruno César, again featuring at left back, triggered a brilliant move foward with Joel Campbell, leaving Bas Dost with little more to do than tap in from a few yards out. An opening goal can often be difficult to come by, but Sporting CP got the anxiety out of the way early and continued to press home the advantage. In the 8th minute Bas Dost released Gelson down the right, but the winger was unable to find the target from a tight angle. Adrien Silva fired over the bar in the 14th minute, before Bas Dost netted his second three minutes later after a deadly pass from Alan Ruiz.

The second-half saw Feirense pull a goal back (61'), after Nuno Santos had shifted his side into a more attacking format in search of a goal. Coates (62') made fantastic last ditch tackle a minute later to deny the visitors an equaliser, followed by another by Bruno César (70') nine minutes later to deny the shot on Beto's goal.

The introduction of Bryan Ruiz (69') saw Sporting CP settle and begin to hold down possession. Forays forward again began to materialise for the hosts, led by Joel Campbell roaring down the wing. The Costa Rican himself came close in the 76th and 79th minute, before setting up his compatriot Bryan Ruiz, but his chipped effort was off target.

Sporting CP will next be in action in a visit to Desportivo de Chaves on the 14th of January.

Jorge Jesus looks ahead to Sunday's Liga NOS hosting of Feirense

Jorge Jesus sat down with the press this Saturday to speak about the weekend's hosting of C.D. Feirense. With recent refereeing performances attracting attention both on and off the pitch, the Sporting coach did not shy away from revealing the impact on his team.

"The lads were really hurt by us getting knocked out of the League Cup, especially with how it happened. We won't hide the fact that confidence is low after a loss. Making mistakes is natural, but always making the same mistakes against the same team isn't", said Jesus, going on to reflect on what he expects from Sunday's match: "Hopefully we will get past this and beat a team who will sit back and look to attack us on the break. We want the tree points."

"Wins bring confidence"

Jorge Jesus highlights his side's mature display against a determined Belenenses side

Speaking in a pre-match press conference, Jorge Jesus praised his side's patience in finally breaking a spirited Belenenses side with an added-time winner from Bas Dost.

"It was a difficult game when you look at the result. We didn't really give Belenenses the chance to attack for the first 40 minutes and we were really good when it came to positioning, but a goal was hard to come by. I told the lads that if we carried on playing like we were then we would score eventually", opened the Sporting CP coach, adding a word on the points gap at the top of Liga NOS: "We let Belenenses go forward a bit in the second-half. You can see the lads are a bit tired, largely due to playing 10 games in a month, but wins bring confidence. Obviously the quality of the lads isn't being questioned at all and we still feel the same pressure, win or lose."

Bas Dost strikes late to secure three points in Estádio do Restelo

A tireless away support pushed Sporting CP over the finish line in Estádio do Restelo this Thursday night, with Bas Dost netting from range deep into injury time after a brilliant cross floated across to the far post by Joel Campbell. Who better than the Dutch hitman to collect on the Costa Rican's pass, with Dost already having proved his credentials in front of goal with nine Liga NOS goals in 12 outings.

The goal was enjoyed both on and off the pitch, with William Carvalho even jumping up off the bench and running to join his colleagues to celebrate in front of the fans. The win was exactly what was needed, with Sporting CP coming into the evening on the back of three less positive results. Credit to Belenenses however, who put up a spirited display to deny Sporting CP right up until the death.

Sporting CP certainly tried to break the deadlock on several occasions (12 shots compared to Belenenses' 9), claiming 13 corners and holding down 58% of possession, however some disciplined defending from the hosts help chances to a minimum. Going forward, Belenense largely relied on counter-attacks and their was a real sense of justice as Bas Dost secured the result three minutes into stoppage time.

Jorge Jesus warns of tough trip across Lisbon to face Os Belenenses

"It is always hard to play in Restelo. (Os Belenenses) are having a good season and they have taken points off one of our rivals already", alerted Jorge Jesus in his pre-match press conference this week, ahead of Thursday's trip across Lisbon to face Os Belenenses).

Looking at Os Belenense in further depth, Jesus added: "They are flying high on some good results right now, they play some competitive football and they will try and work to their strengths against us. However, we will of course be looking for the three points."

Sporting CP's recent results are a far cry from Alvalade's ambition's, however Jesus sees this as the perfect chance for his side to get back on track: "Since I came in here, we have almost always own. We started this season really well and this kind of crises only started this week. It comes from going to Luz just two points behind and coming away five behind. Of course the league is our objective, but we a fighting hard on all fronts."
