By Sporting CP

New coach appointed this Thursday

This Thursday Rúben Amorim was appointed as new head coach of Sporting Clube de Portugal. The former SC Braga coach, who already guided his first training session in the morning, guaranteed he is prepared to face this new phase in his sports career.

“I am aware that this is a great challenge and I really believe in the Club. Even when you are not a part of it, everyone can see the club greatness. It is a huge pride to be in this house and defend these colors. I know what Sporting CP is, regardless of the moment. I believe in the Club and I hope they believe me. I am focused on work. I can try to convince Sporting CP fans who do not believe me, but in football results are everything. I am prepared for this challenge, I know that there is a great pressure, but I will do my best to honor this invitation”, said the 35 year-old coach who, after the presentation, also had the opportunity, together with the rest of the technical team, to visit the Sporting Museum and learn more about the Club History.

Before the statements by Rúben Amorim, Sporting CP president, Frederico Varandas, spoke to journalists and explained the choice on the portuguese coach. “Rúben Amorim is the coach of our project, especially because he is aligned with our vision for football: supported by academy players, without fearing of training, playing and strengthening these players. He is our choice, not only for the results obtained at SC Braga, but for the deep knowledge we have of him as a man. It is a paradigm shift, and I have no problem investing in the right coach. We hired a great coach, but not a miracle worker. He is a very ambitious coach, with a lot of belief, who knows the reality of Portuguese football, the demands of a big club and Sporting’s ambition. We are completely lined up and today the 2020/2021 season starts for Sporting CP”, he considered.

The current Futsal European Champions won the first game against Novo Vrijeme Makarska.

Sporting CP's Futsal team started the UEFA Futsal Champions League the right way by beating 4-0 the Croatians Novo Vrijeme Makarska by 4-0.

With Gonçalo Portugal as the goalie, the Lions scored the first goal in the first minute by Alex. Seven minutes later, the second goal arrived by Pany Varela shot towards goal.

Even though the team wasn't playing at full throttle, the Lions took control of the match and showed their superiority against the two time and current Croatian Champions.

Until the end of the first half, the Green and White team could have scored more goals but our opponents goalie was provnig to be a very tough wall to break through.

The second-half started the same way as the first one - with goals. Léo shot straight towards goal and instants after that, Pauleta grabbed the opportunity of scoring another, after Léo's perfect pass. The result was set: 4-0.

This Friday, the Lions will play the second game of this Elite Round of the UEFA Futsal Champions League against MFC Ayat.

Amazing Win Against SC Braga/AAUM

Sporting CP's futsal team hosted and beat SC Braga / AAUM 7-2 for the 11th round of the Placard League.

With Gonçalo Portugal as the Lions goalkeeper and Alex Merlim out of Nuno Dias's options, the Lions strated to create goal opportunities before the timer hit the 10 minutes.

The first goals of the match came from the Portuguese International, Pany Varela, with a beautiful chip over the keeper.

Right before the break, in just two minutes, the Lions had already scored three goals with the later two being scored by Cavinato and the Captain João Matos.

With 16 seconds to go, the Lions could not take their foot off the gás, and the fourth goal appeared naturally. Alex was the scorer this time. The result was set by the end of the first 20 minutes as the green and white team was ahead by 4.

After a strong first half, the second part of the game started with another green and white goal by Pauleta. Almost immediately after came the sixth goal following a beautiful play by Rocha, who dribbled two opponents and the opposing goalkeeper.

The visiting team managed to score a goal after 7 minutes into the second half. Two minutes later, Alex scored the Lions 7th goal.

In a one-way match, SC Braga/AAUM still managed to score their second goal however there was little they could do against a very strong Sporting CP who was constantly backed by chanting fans.

Another Win for the Lions

The Lions volleyball team went to Viana do Castelo and won the match by 0-3, thus remaining unbeaten on matchday 6 of the Honda Championship, with just one set handed.

The Lions only needed three sets to beat VC Viana, a team that has had only one win since the start of the competition.

In the first set, the green and white formation, which occupies the first place of the table, shut down the opponent by and illuminated 11-25 set.

In the second set, despite the attempted response from the men playing at home, the result once again smiled for Alvalade's team with an eleven points difference (14-25).

In the third and final set, the Lions repeated the numbers achieved in the first set and beat VC Viana 11-25.

In the next round, the green and white team will receive SC Caldas on November 16th.

Growing translates in points for the team

League Cup holders debuted in the league with a win

Still going through a growth phase, all wins are worth gold. After returning from the national team, Sporting CP beat Marítimo in the opening day of the League Cup (3-1) and began defending the trophy convincingly. The goals of Raphinha and Bruno Fernandes (to double) were worth three points, but not only. After an early season with suffered triumphs, winning with reassurance is to take a solid step to strengthen the new game model.

With few changes to the team and a strong competitive attitude from the beginning, the lions noticeably faced this match as if it were the championship. Moreover, Jose Peseiro did not shy away from the usual choices. Bruno Gaspar earned his first start as well as Jovane, who has had a direct impact on the team's results. Still, it was Raphinha again claiming to be the main unbalance to the opposite team during the first half. After just two minutes, he almost opened the scoring after a cross from Jefferson, which was the announcement of an exhibition full of positive actions. Sporting CP was able to find spaces between the lines of Marítimo (Jovane and Raphinha searched for inland areas frequently), but missed many attack with crosses to which no one answered. Marítimo, with a defensive position that did not show security, gained another life when the ball reached the men in the front. Barrera and Correa, on the flanks, and Danny, above all, tried to annoy the green and white defense, but with no great success. With Battaglia more positional at the head of the defense, Acuña was ahead on the pitch and the first goal was a recovery from the Argentine in the offensive midfield - Montero, with the usual calm, isolated Raphinha 1-0. Later, near the break, the roles were reversed and the Brazilian discovered the Colombian in the vicinity of the area. Bad reception, wasted bid.

The lions entered the second half passing the ball slowly, without approaching Charles's goal. Everything changed from one moment to the next: on the left, Jefferson found Jovane in the area and the kid - once again - won a penalty. Bruno Fernandes quietly put the 2-0 on the scoreboard. Cláudio Braga's group, which had already threatened, reached the attack and restored the minimum difference soon after. Danny (at 35 years old, maintains the usual technical quality and game vision) released Correa and the Argentine did not pardon in the face of Salin. It was a busy phase in Alvalade, as the 3-1 would soon appear. Montero made his second assist - so often discreet, almost always useful in the collective operation - offering the double to Bruno Fernandes. In the final stretch of the match, José Peseiro wanted to add pressure in the central zone, throwing Wendel (for Bruno Fernandes, who dropped to the left) and Gudelj. With few minutes playing with the lion on his chest, the last green and white reinforcement appeared as a judicious average and with ease to unfold the attack - otherwise, Montero could have scored after the Serbian pass, but shot over the goal by Charles. With the time passing, Marítimo stopped attacking and who was close to another goal was Sporting CP, namely by Bruno Fernandes. Already in extra time, Lucas Áfrico violently fouled Wendel and received an immediate red. An avoidable bid, when everyone was preparing for the end. If there were any doubts that one of the objectives of Sporting CP was to defend the title in the League Cup, Alvalade's night killed them completely.
