Sporting CP present third kit

Sporting Clube de Portugal will debut their 2021/22 third kit on Wednesday, September 15th, in the match against AFC Ajax that marks Os Leões return to the UEFA Champions League.

The new kit is already available on the Loja Verde Online Store and in stores, for members of the Sportinguista family to wear to support the team.

The third kit Leão is inspired by the fighting spirit present in Sporting CP DNA, with hints of a camouflage pattern, and the campaign highlights the club's eclecticism. The kit was specially selected for European competitions, and the Sporting CP teams who are the current European Champions in roller hockey and futsal were featured in the presentation video.

The launch of the new kit continues Nike's campaign bearing the motto 'Believe,', but with a focus on the concept of being “ready to perform”, and showing behind the scenes preparations of players through to the moment of truth, ending with the message:

“For you to believe, we have to be ready."

Sporting CP are ready; let the Champions League games begin!

Sporting CP ice cream a summer success

By Sporting CP
28 May, 2021

A second run of a commemorative treat is planned

Everybody likes celebrating a Liga NOS title win. Everybody also likes ice cream, making it no surprise that a commemorative ice lolly has become the hit of the early summer around Lisbon and beyond.

Manufacturer Olá, who for over 60 years have produced frozen snacks in Portugal, brought out a 'Sporting CP campeão' version of their classic 'Perna de Pau' ('Pegleg') ice cream. Whilst the pirate-themed lolly has used a red colour scheme for decades, it was changed to green and white for a limited edition version in honour of Os Leões' first league title in 19 years,

The ice cream sold out in days to devoted Sportinguistas around Portugal, leading Olá to double the initial production.

Sporting CP's own Loja Verde store and sales points around the Estádio José Alvalade will also have the next run of Olá lollies available.

12 Feb, 2021

The new accessory proves to be an instant success

Don't adjust your screens. That really is João Pereira, Nuno Santos and Zouhair Feddal, representing Sporting CP on the streets of Lisbon, rather than the Shelby family on the streets of Birmingham.

This Wednesday, the Club ran a social media campaign inspired by the Netflix and BBC show 'Peaky Blinders,' and the trio of players were more than happy to participate.

The image shows the three players in a style identical to the characters on the show, as a way to mark the launch of the ‘Boina Fazenda Verde’ cap in the Loja Verde official store. Stock soon ran out, as fans rushed to pick up the limited edition item, causing an increase in traffic on the online shop. In response, a new cap is already being planned for release, with more details to be given soon.

As previously announced, as part of the Club's digital transformation project, a new online Loja Verde will be launched this year, with development already underway in partnership with Dixtior.

Estádio José Alvalade to host final stages of Champions League

By Sporting CP
12 Aug, 2020

Lisbon replaces Istanbul as the host city for the final

The Estádio José Alvalade will host two UEFA Champions League games this week, as the tournament relocates to Lisbon for a modified format that includes the quarterfinals, semifinals and final.

The decision was announced back in June, and saw the Portuguese capital chosen as the location for the entirety of the closing stages. Sporting CP's famous stadium will hold two quarter finals, plus one of the semifinals, played over single games.

The competition would normally follow a schedule of two-legged ties, taking in both home and away matches for the participating teams, before a final game to crown the European champions. However, the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak and the risk inherent to international travel has led to a change of venue and a compacted format.

Lisbon replaces Istanbul, Turkey, as the host city for the final, originally set for May 30th at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium.

Matches confirmed for the José Alvalade are the quarterfinals between RB Leipzig and Atlético Madrid, and Manchester City vs. Olympique Lyonnais. The second of the two semifinals, set for the 18th & 19th of August, will also be held at the ground.

The José Alvalade has 5-star classification from UEFA, and has previously been the venue for the 2005 UEFA Cup final. In that game, Sporting CP missed out on the trophy in a defeat to CSKA Moscow.

All Champions League games at the stadium will be played behind closed doors, in accordance with UEFA's protocol for the competition. Upon making the decision, UEFA made a commitment to "constantly evaluate the situation across the continent and contact local authorities to determine when a gradual return for spectators will be possible", but it has not yet been deemed safe for supporters to attend the closing stages of the tournament.

2019/20 UEFA Champions League calendar:

Quarterfinals
August 12th: Atalanta vs. Paris Saint Germain (8pm local time)
August 13th: RB Leipzig vs. Atlético Madrid (8pm, Estádio José Alvalade)
August 14th: FC Barcelona vs. Bayern Munich (8pm)
August 15th: Manchester City vs. Olympique Lyonnais (8pm, Estádio José Alvalade)

Semifinals
August 18th: Semifinal 1 (8pm)
August 19th: Semifinal 2 (8pm, Estádio José Alvalade)

Final
August 23rd: UEFA Champions League final (8pm)

10 Sep, 2018

"A victory of the independence, the resistance, resilience and the ability to overcome"

At the most attended Electoral General Assembly in the history of Sporting Clube de Portugal, with 22,400 voters - out of 51,000 qualified for the electoral event, Frederico Varandas became the 44th President of the Board of Directors of Sporting CP, five Vice-Presidents, namely Francisco Salgado Zenha; Filipe Osório de Castro; Pedro Barros de Lencastre; João Sampaio; and Maria José Sancho, as well as the vowels Francisco Santos; Rahim Ahamad; Miguel Afonso; and Miguel Nogueira Leite. He will also have as Chairman of the Board of the General Meeting Rogério Alves and Joaquim Baltazar Pinto as Chairman of the Fiscal and Disciplinary Board.

In his first approach, as the new President, to the audience that was waiting for him on the stage in the Centenary Square, Frederico Varandas was magnanimous: "The first words go to the candidates for the Presidency of Sporting Clube de Portugal." Rui Rego, Dias Ferreira , Jose Maria Ricciardi, João Benedito and Fernando Tavares Pereira. All of them, I greet them, and to all the Sportinguistas that supported them, they have my respect. They believed they were the best for the Club. Sportinguistas like me and all of you 3,5 million that make up Sporting Clube de Portugal, a special word for João Benedito, the second candidate with the most votes in this electoral process. João is a great athlete and I hope he never leaves the Club. He does and will always be part of our history. I also want to highlight the vitality that led to the most attended Electoral General Assembly in the 112-year history of Sporting CP. This demonstrates the strength of a club that is not only special: it is a giant. thanks to today's demonstration, more than 22 thousand people exercised their right to vote. To my team, who has been with me for three and a half months in this marathon, which I'm working on all these days. All the Members who supported us and gave us ideas, who encouraged us, never wavered and always believed in us every day: thank you from the bottom of our hearts. This was a very important and symbolic win for Sporting CP. It is a victory of independence, resistance, resilience and the ability to overcome. That's how Sporting CP is going ahead. We will not yield, falter or abdicate the values and ideals of the Club. The motto of this candidacy is to unite Sporting Clube de Portugal. The time has come to put words into action. Now it is not about me: the mission has to be yours. To unite is not only to say, it is also to unite, being in the stadium next to who does not agree with us in the subject A, B or C, but when the ball enters, we shout all very high that is a goal of Sporting CP. It is putting the interests of the Club above our individual ones. Unity is to put Sporting CP above all others. I was an independent candidate and I will be an independent President. The only commitment I will have is with you. I and my team will fight for Sporting CP for the rest of our lives, our energies, with passion, love and a lot of competence".

Even in the final stretch of his victory speech, Frederico Varandas took his medal from the final of the last edition of the Portuguese Cup on 20 May. "I've never looked at it, but it will be this medal that sooner or later will go to the Museum together with the national champion football cup," he said.
