João Vaz renews deal with Sporting CP

Swimming superstar extends stay until 2020

Alvalade's adapted swimming superstar João Vaz has extended his deal with the club until 2020.

Born in Lisbon on the 22nd of December, Vaz took up the sport in October 2008, with coach Alexandre Ferreira, in Portela swimming ppol, Loures.

He has been with Sporting CP since April 2009, under the coaching of Rui Gama. He took part in the National Winter Championship for the first time in February 2010, winning his first medals in the process. He racked up various national and European titles in 2011,2012 and 2013, before winning silver in the World Championships in the 400m medley and 200m breast stroke event.

He won a total of five silver medals and two bronze in the 2015 European Championships and was recognised with a Stromp Award in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Simone sets new S5 butterfly 50m personal record

Alvalde swimmer in action in the IPC European Open

Simone Fragoso set a new 50m personal best in the S5 butterfly 50m event this week, lower her time to 52.28.

The Alvalade swimmer finished in an admirable 7th place in what was a tough field won by Sarah Louise Rung  with a time of 43.71.

The other Sporting swimmer in action, Filipe Garcia, took part in the S9 freestyle 50m event, finishing in 13th with a time of 28.83.

Alvalade star shines in DSISO Championship

João Vaz finally arrived back in Lisbon at the end of this week after racking up no less than seven medals (five silver and two bronze) at the DSISO European Championships.

João Vaz's results in the 12 events he took part in:

- 200m butterfly – silver

- 400m medley – silver

- 4x25m medley – silver

- 4x50m freestyle – silver

- 4x100m medley – silver

- 4x50m medley – bronze

- 4x100m freestyle – bronze

- 200 metros estilos – 4th

- 4x50m freestyle – 4th

- 50m breast stroke – 5th

- 100m butterfly – 6th

- 200m breast stroke – disqualified

Alvalade swimmer claims podium finish in 400m medley at the DSISO European Championships

João Vaz got his participation in this year's DSISO European Championships off to a dream start this weekend, winning a silver medal in the 400m medley event.

The Sporting athlete finished in a time of 6:43.26, beaten only by the Italian competitor Francesco Piccinini.

João Vaz had already earned a reputation over the distance, having won silver in the World Championships in Mexico last year.

Competition to be hosted in the Italian city of Loano

João Vaz will be in action in the DSISO 2015 European Championships over the next few days.

The 23-year old is going into action on a high, having already been crowned 400m medley European champion in 2013 and world runner-up in the 200m breast stroke and 400m medley last year.

Portuguese squad in full: João Vaz, Diogo Matos, Diogo Santos, Filipe Santos, José Ribeiro, José Vieira, Adriana Reis, Ana Castro, Carina Moreira, Diana Torres and Filipa Reis.

Sporting coach Rui Gama is also part of the traveling contingent.

Simone qualifies for Paralympics

Sporting athlete books place in Rio 2016

Simone Fragoso reached the minimum qualification time for the 50m freestyle swimming event at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympics this week.

The Alvalade athlete swam a time of 44.37s in the S5 event, guaranteeing a place in Brazil next year.
