Youth stars Gonçalo Vieira and Gil Santos at The Future of Football Congress to listen to their heroes

In addition to the Sporting CP youth coach Tiago Fernandes, the central defender Gonçalo Vieira and the striker Gil Santos also spoke at The Future of Football International Congress this week, in Estádio José Alvalade.

"We are here today to represent our team and to listen to the people who have given so much and will continue to give to world football", said Gil Santos, before passing the microphone to Vieira: "Listening to more experienced people, to former players and coaches helps us to learn more. It is a pleasure to be part of a club that organises such an important event."

Asked about their thoughts on the coming panels, the two players know exactly what they want to listen to. "I want ot hear the Éder's mental coach [Susana Torres], because of what happened last year", said Gonçalo, with Gil adding: "I have always admired Luís Figo and I will listen to carefully to him. He has always had an intellectual way of doing things both on and off the pitch, which is something that you don't normally see."

"We could have won the three points"

Tiago Fernandes still optimistic on UEFA Youth League knock-out stage chances

Tiago Fernandes was obviously frustrated with his side's UEFA Youth League draw against Borussia Dortmund this Tuesday night, but the Sporting under-19 coach isn't throwing in the towel in just yet.

"We feel like we could have won the three points. Mistakes are costly in this kind of competition and we could have scored more goals. Unfortunately the immaturity of the lads shows at times, but we will go to Dortmund looking win a place in the next round", guaranteed Tiago Fernandes at the final whistle.

The evening will also be remembered for a generous moment of fair play between the two sides. Dario Scuderi picked up a serious injury earlier in the competition and a tribute to the Dortmund youngster wasn't wasted on Sporting, with Fernandes's side offering a signed shirt with his number on the back. "It was shocking, but he is still a young lad with a lot ahead of him. We wanted to show our support to him", said the under-19 coach.
