Bruno de Carvalho in radio interview with TSF on Portugal's Euro 2016 campaign

Sporting's mention in the conversation about the origins of current Portuguese national side if unavoidable. Speaking with TSF about the nation's run to the Euro 2016 final, which has no fewer than 10 players in the squad which were produced by the club's youth system, Bruno de Carvalho highlighted the importance of Alvalade in every age group.

“I have believed we would do well from the start. We didn't get off to a brilliant start, but football can be like that. It is in moments like that where we see a person's true character and the talent of the team. I prepared everything to go to the final on the 11th of July and I will be there", opened the Sporting president, adding: "As a Portuguese, I am really happy for the entire squad. as the president of Sporting Clube de Portugal, although I look at the national team as a whole, I have to mention that the under-21 team reached the final with a team of 11 players that had 8 from Sporting. On the 11th of July 2016, we had 10 players in the senior squad, which means we have contributed a total of 18 players. There is no comparison to that."

Rui Patrício, Adrien Silva, William Carvalho and João Mário have been near permanent features in the team and Bruno de Carvalho couldn't be prouder: "When you have players of that quality, it is normal. We were prepared for this. Of course this opens us up to bids for players, but we want them with us. The lads deserve this for the work they have put in and I am sure it is something they have wanted for a long time. I don't mind who we play against to be honest. Both teams are really strong and Portugal will have to show collective quality."

We are complying with the financial fair-play rules and we are in positive territory right now, which can support an increase in the cost of the squad."

Asked about his relationship with the agent Jorge Mendes, the Sporting president was preemptive: "I have no interest in seeing a player sold for 300 million euros but only 3 million actually comes to Sporting. I hear people talking about millions and millions and millions, that 500 billion euros have passed through his hands. Well good for him. People think I am arrogant, but I am 100% humble about the whole thing and I hate this stupidity. When people are being stupid, then of course I am arrogant. I will put up with the worst person in the world for 100 years, 24 hours a day, if they are useful for Sporting."

Bruno de Carvalho on transfer activity so far

Preparations for the coming campaign actually got underway back in January, with the arrivals of Sebastián Coates, Schelotto and Rúben Semedo. The summer transfer window has also seen a wave of activity, with Sporting bringing in Alan Ruiz, Federico Ruiz, Lukas Spalvis and now Petrovic.

“The club will present our new signings without making too much noise about it. We are working on a medium to long term project with well defined objectives, starting with keeping our coach, investing in the youth system and bringing in players who can make the difference", opened Bruno de Carvalho in an interview this week, adding: "It was important for us to stabilise things financially so that we can fight for all national competitions and, who nows, maybe some European ones too in the coming seasons."

The press published this week that Sporting had turned down a bit of 80,000,000.00€, to which the Sporting president responded: "In January we were are the top of the league and focused on winning it, so a financial decision wasn't going to change our sports strategy at that time. Taking apart a team fighting for the league so that we could sell an essential player didn't make any sense."
