Alvalade athlete secures Rio 2016 pole vault spot

Maria Leonor Tavares reached the Olympic minimums with a fantastic performance in the Francoville Meeting this week. Clearing 4.50m in the pole vault competition to equal her personal best.

The Sporting athlete also took part in the 2012 Games, where she finished 31st. This will be the first time in history that Sporting CP will have two athletes competing in the pole vault competition.

Alvalade secures Olympics spot and breaks national record in the process

Cátia Azevedo has added her name to a lengthy list of Sporting athletes who will be in Rio 2016.

The Sporting runner smashed the national 400m record at the Madrid Meeting this week, securing an Olympic spot with a time of 51.63s.

Sporting CP wins 100m and 200m events in Salamanca meeting

Lorene Bazolo secured a spot in Rio 2016 with a brilliant performance in Spain this weekend. Covering the sprint distance of 100m in just 11.21 seconds, breaking the national record in the process, and 200m in 23.11 seconds, Bazolo will next try her luck in the Olympic Games.

Meanwhile Vera Barbosa won the 400m hurdles competition at the same event, finishing in a time of 57.51 seconds.

Jéssica Augusto, Sara Moreira and João Vieira to feature in Olympics

Sara Moreira and Jéssica Augusto have been called up to the national Portuguese squad for the female marathon in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The Portuguese Athletics Federation also announced its squad for the male marathon and race walking events, while will see João Vieira take part in the 20km and 50km distances and Vera Santos named as a reserve.

Carlos Lopes overjoyed with ECC win

Carlos Lopes was understandably proud with Sporting's historic win in the European Champions Club Cup Track and Field this weekend in Turkey.

"The board has put a lot of investment into the athletics department. Sporting has deserved this trophy for a long time and it was a trophy that was missing from our museum. We worked really hard and everyone believed we could do it", said the Sporting athletics boss in an interview with Sporting TV, adding: "It wasn't as easy as it looked and we did slip up in places, but little by little we are building up a team that will bring us a lot of moments like this. We had already won this title in the male competition and our ladies had already finished second and third."

Sporting CP's ladies win ECC Track and Field title

Alvalade ladies win Euro title for the first time in there history

For the first time in the department's history, Sporting's female athletics team claimed the European Champions Club Track and Field title, thanks to some inspired performanced in Mersin.

Building on a total of seven out of eleven wins on Saturday, Vânia Silva opened Sunday's action with a 4th place finish in the the hammer throw. Sviatlana Kudzelich was next up, finishing 2nd in the 1500m, before Anabela Neto finished 5th in the high jump. Lorene Bazolo followed with a 2nd place in the 200m, before Jessica Inchude finished 4th in the shot putt.

After Jessica Augusto put in a stunning showing to win the 5000m, Alvalade's ladies pulled off an emphatic victory in the 4x400m relay to claim the prestigious title.

Sporting CP leads ECC rankings after first day

Alvalade ladies in instoppable form in Mersin

Sporting closed the first of two days of action in the European Champions Club Cup Track and Field senior in first place this Saturday.

Alvalade's ladies won a total of seven of the 11 events up or grabs: Marta Onofre (pole vault), Patrícia Mamona (triple jump), Vera Barbosa (400m hurdles), Irina Rodrigues (discus), Lorene Bazolo (100m), Sara Moreira (3000m) and Sviatlana Kudzelich (3000m steeple chase).

A total of nine events will take place on Sunday.

Alvalade athlete dominates ECC triple jump competition

Patrícia Mamona pulled off a largely expected win in the ECC Track and Field Senior triple jump competition this Saturday, finishing a good margin ahead of the rest of the pack.

After a day of action and with 11 events competed, Sporting leads the rankings with 79 points.

Sporting athlete secures Euro triple jump spot

Patrícia Mamona is in absolutely brilliant form this season. This time the Alvalade triple jumper finished 3rd in the Diamond League Rabat Meeting, clearing a distance of 14.13 on her 3rd jump to also secure a a place in the coming European Championships in Amsterdam.
