Alvalade athlete in brilliant form ahead of Rio 2016

Sara Moreira brought her Ibero-American Championships in Athletics to a close with a brilliant gold medial this week, in the 2016 Olympic Games host city, Rio de Janeiro.

the Sporting athlete topped the podium in the 5,000m event, after finishing more than 46 seconds ahead of the second placed Florencia Borelli.

Sara's final time was clocked at 15m40s33.

Seminar on high performance athetes in Alvalade

Olympic Office brings together athletes, coaches and managers

Sporting's Olympic Office organised a seminar in Alvalade this week, focusing on "Optimisation of Sports Performance".

Club president Bruno de Carvalho was on hand to open the session, leading ahead of a session with Tomaz Morais, Portugal's coordinator of rugby coach training and the country's female sevens team on the theme of "Motivation nad Leadership in High Performance Training". The former rugby star focused in on the importance of motivation and confidence, as well as the role of managers and coaches.

A second session followed with João Valente-dos-Santos, Sporting's roller hockey assistant coach and fitness coach. Geared around "Optimisation and Monitoring of High Performance", his presentation was based on scientific measurements and the importance of injury prevention.

 

The day finished with closing comments from Commanader Vicente de Moura, Sporting's vice-president for sports, stressing the importance of internal meetings within the club.

David Lima sets new 100m personal best

Alvalade sprinter on form in Florida to qualify for European Championships

David Lima continues in fine form, this time setting a new 100m personal best with a time of 10.29, after having already broken his 200m record.

In action in the NTC Puré Athletics Spring competition in Clermont, Florida, Lima carved 9 hundreths of a second off his previous best. The time was enough to for Lima to reach the B minimums for the European Championships 100m event.

Jéssica in 10th in London Marathon

Sporting athlete breaks 2:29.00 barrier to secure another top-10 finish

Jéssica Augusto claimed an admirable 10th place finish in the London Marathon this weekend, on top of her 8th place in 2011 (2:24.33) and 2012 (2:24.59) and sixth in 2014 (2:24.25, personal best.

More than 40,000 runners took part in the event, for what was Jéssica's first marathon showing since her bronze medal win in Zurich in June 2015.

Jéssica finished in a time of 2:22.58, in a race won by the Ethiopian athlete Tigist Tufa (2:23.03).

David Lima sets new 200m personal best

Alvalade sprinter finishes in 20.68 to secure sport in Amsterdam

David Lima made the best possible start to the outdoor season with a new 200m personal best this weekend, running in Florida's James G. Pressly Stadium as part of the Tom Jones Memorial event.

Lima's time of 20.68s also secured a place in the coming European Athletics Championships, to be hosted in Amsterdam.

Diogo Abreu secures spot in Rio 2016

Alvalade star best Portuguese athlete in individual event

Diogo Abreu today claimed the only spot up for grabs in Rio 2016, with a fine display in a trampoline test event in the host city. The Alvalade athlete finished fourth in the qualification round with a total of 105,780 points, securing his place in the final.

Abreu went on to beat Diogo Ganchinho by 0,125 points to confirm his presence at the Olympic Games, becoming Sporting's first trampolinist to qualify.

Hermano Ferreira in 10th in Vienna Marathon

Alvalade athlete best European athlete in action in Austria

Hermano Ferreira finished the Vienna Marathon in a time of 2:15.48, securing 10th place with Europe's best performance.

The Kenyan Robert Chemosin claimed the gold with a time of 2:09.48, followed by fellow countrymen Charles Cheruiyot (2:10.09) and Suleiman Simotwo ( 2:10.15). 

João Vieira claims 11th in Rio Maior International GP

Vitória Oliveira finishes 15th, while Vera Santos is forced out an Paulo Martins claims 6th in junior event

João Vieira finished the Rio Maior International GP Race Walk in an admirable 11th place this weekend, to finish as the top placed Portuguese athlete. Vieira, who has already booked his place in Rio 2016, finished in a time of 1:24.25.

In the female event, Vera Santos was unable to win the race won by the Chinese athlete Shenjie Qieyang (1:27.52).

18 Alvalade athletes in Federation's tribute

Masters and Champions Gala held in Pombal on Saturday

The Portuguese Athletics Federation hosted a Masters and Champions Gala at the Pombal Expocentre this weekend, paying tribute to a total of 30 athletes in nomination list that included a total of 18 Alvalade names.

“This tribute looks to revive the general public's memory, but also to remind the current generation of athletes about the things that those who came before them achieved. Their achievements raised the expectations of a lot of young athletes who have had more support in their training and it gives them examples of humility, persistence, tenacity and total dedication. Behind every great athlete is a great coach too", explained Jorge Vieira at the ceremony.

Eduardo Henriques, Jéssica Augusto, João Vieira, Patrícia Mamona, Sara Moreira – que estava na Meia Maratona de Praga –, Youssef El Kalai, Carla Sacramento, Carlos Calado, Domingos Castro, Fernando Mamede, Luís Gonçalves, Manuela Machado, Mário Silva, Naide Gomes, Paulo Guerra, Carlos Lopes, Francis Obikwelu and Rui Silva foram were the 18 Alvalade athletes to receive medals.

Also receiving awards were: Ana Dulce Félix, Analídia Torre, António Pinto, Albertina Dias, Aurora Cunha, Conceição Ferreira, João Campos, Susana Feitor, António Leitão, Fernanda Ribeiro, Nélson Évora and Rosa Mota. 

João Vieira qualifies for 50km Olympic event

Alvalade athlete secures spot with performance in Dudince

João Vieira has guaranteed his place in the Rui 2016 50km racewalking event, on top of his spot in the 20km competition. the Sporting athlete finished in 8th in the Dudince International Grand Prix, with a time of 3:49.05.

João Vieira, who finished 10th in the 2004 Games and 11th in 2012, now has a chance to shine in Brazil, after having already claimed the national title this year.
