Egutidze comes up just short of bronze

Anri Egutidze finishes Dusseldorf Grand Prix in 5th

Tallying three wins and two loses, Anri Egutidze finished in an admirable 5th place in the Dusseldorg Grand Prix <81kg competition this weekend, falling just short of the bronze medal.

Anri Egutidz opened with a win against Lukasz Blach and Dominic Ressel, before missing out to Ivaylo Ivanov.

The Alvalade judoka recovered to beat Ambako Avaliani, before finally being stopped by Dorin Gotonoaga.

Oleinic fifth in Dusseldorf

Alvalade judoka comes up just short of bronze medal

Sergiu Oleinic claimed a 5th place finish in the Dusseldorf Grand Prix this week, after missing out in the bronze medal encounter against Tal Flicker.

Oleinic, who finished in seventh in the Paris Grand Slam, is now on the verge of climbing up the world rankings from his current 13th spot.

Alvalade judoka wins medal encounter with ippon

The Sporting CP athlete Jorge Fonesca claimed the bronze medal in the <100kg category at the Paris Grand Slam this weekend. In his opening encounter, Fonseca beat the Olympic silver medalist Elmar Gasimov, before getting the better of Kyu-Won Lee and Karl-Richard Frey.

Sergiu Oleinic seventh in Paris Grand Slam

A top-10 finish and two debuts for Sporting in the French capital

Alvalade judoka Sergiu Oleinic finished seventh in the Paris Grand Slam this week, after coming up just short of a bronze medal. Competing in the <66kg competition, Oleinic opened with a win against Sinan Sandal, before beating Sulaiman Hamad. Oleinic's run was eventually brought to a halt by Antoine Bouchard and Vazha Margvelashviki.
 
"I started well in my first two fights and the draw was kind to be as well. I was surprised a bit by the Canadian in the quarter-finals", said Oleinic at the end of the day.
 
Also in action were youngsters Maria Siderot and David Reis. In the <66kg competition, Reis missed out in his first encounter, but is a promising athlete to keep an eye on in the future. Meanwhile Maria Siderot (<48kg) won here first bout.

Six Alvalade judokas in Paris Grand Slam

Six out of a squad of eleven from Sporting CP for Portugal

The Portuguese Judo Federation announced its squad for the coming Paris Grand Slam this week, with six Alvalade judokas featuring for the tournament, running from the 9th to the 16th of February: Sergiu Oleinic, David Reis, Anri Egutidze, Jorge Fonseca, Maria Siderot and Joana Ramos.

Alvalade judo claims Golden League bronze

Sporting CP beat KBR Nalchik to secure podium spot

Sporting CP's judo team claimed a bronze medal in the Golden League this weekend, after getting the better of the Russian outfit KBR Nalchik by a dominating 5-0. Representing Sporting CP in the decisive bout was Sergiu Oleinic (<66kg), Rustam Orujov (<73kg), Anri Egutidze (<81kg), Nikoloz Sherazadishvili (<90kg) and Jorge Fonsesa (>90kg).

Sporting CP also got the better of the hosts Edelweiss Grozny, after having lost their first encounter against Sagaredjo Superstars.

Speaking with the press at the end of the day, Alvalade judo coach Pedro Soares was in a positive mood: "It was a really high level competition, just like it was last year. We lost 3-2 against the Georgian teak in the first round, which we knew was basically the same as the final for us. We did well, but these competitions are really contested and the smallest detail makes the difference."

Sporting to host Golden League

European Judo Union selects Alvalade in partnership with Portuguese Federation

The European Judo Federation has selected the joint bid by Sporting CP, the Portuguese Judo Federation and Iguarivarius to host the 2017 edition of the Golden League.

Sporting CP will be in action in the 2016 edition of the competition in Grozny this weekend, taking on Fighter Tbilisi, TSV Abensberg; Yawara-Neva, Sagaredjo FF Superstars, Green Hill KBR Nalchik, Sport Judo Club Edelweiss and Shevardeni 2005.

Anri Egutidze wins silver in Junior Euros

Alvalade judoka only stopped in the final by Nemanja Majdov

Anri Egutidze won a silver medal in the Junior European Judo Championships this weekend in the <81kg event, after being stopped in the final by the Serbian Nemanja Majdov.

In reaching the final the Portuguese judoka beat Davis Duda, Nicolas Chilard, Jim Heijman and Tim Gramkow.

Coach Pedro Soares affirms Sporting's intentions going into Rio 2016

The coming Olympic Games in Rio 2016 will see a total of four Sporting judokas in action: Joana Ramos (<52kg), Sergiu Oleinic (<66kg), Jorge Fonseca (<100kg) aand Taciana Lima (<48kg).

"The four athletes guaranteed their place in Rio a long time ago, almost a year ago in fact. That is a sign of their quality and consistency, so we are really proud of them", said Pedro Soares in an interview with the Sporting Journal, adding: "You can expect us to fight. I don't like to speak about medals, because that isn't where the athletes' heads need to be. We have prepared well and nobody is carrying any sort of injury. We will expect the best from all of them and we will of course fight for medals."
