Alvalade athlete on half-marathon podium

Jéssica Augusto finished the 27th Barcelona half-marathon in 3rd place this weekend, finishing the distance in a time of 1:10.36.

Florence Jebet Kiplagat came up short of recovering her world record, but finished in first two minutes ahead of Augusto.

Sporting CP agrees new physiotherapy deal for Olympic athletes

Sporting CP's Olympic Department has teamed up with the Fisiomar clinic for the physiotherapy needs of the club's athletes. The deal is valid through until 2020.

Speaking with the Sporting Journal, Fisiomar managing partner Vítor Zeferino explained the motivation behind the partnership: "This is the first partnership we have made with a club. The opportunity came up to team up with such a big club and we took on the challenge. We have already worked with some of the club's athletes, including Sara Moreira and Jéssica Augusto, and they recommended us for this really important period leading up to the Olympic Games. Sporting CP is the most represented Portuguese club at the Olympic Games and this is challenge for us. It is great and now hopefully the athletes will bring back some medals."

Alvalade triple jump star clears 16.57m to claim gold in Sporting CP debut

The Sporting CP triple jumper Nelson Évora claimed a fabulous gold medal in the Val de Reuil International Meeting this week, with a distance of 16.57m. The nearest athlete to the Sporting CP debutant was France's Jean-Marc Pontvianne (16.53m).

Rabah Aboud happy with his contribution to Sporting CP's return to European silverware

Rabah Aboud was understandably pleased with his second place finish in the ECCC Cross Country this weekend, in addition to making the decisive contribution to Sporting CP's silver medal in the team event.

"It was an excellent race for me. I controlled most of it and I tried to finish as best as I could. I didn't win, but it was a great result for the club", said Aboud, adding: "I am really honoured to be part of Sporting CP's athletics team. I am sure next season I can finish in first. I wasn't far off this year."

The second Sporting CP athlete to ross to line was Licínio Pimentel, who was overjoyed with the club's return to top level European action: "It was a great result for Sporting CP in a competition we haven't taken part in for 19 years. We knew the club wanted to do well and we approached the competition with that in mind. After such a long break, we have come back with the silver medal."

Sporting CP runner up in ECCC Cross Country

Alvalade returns to the top European stage with a podium finish

Sporting CP finished runner-up in the European Champions Club Cup Cross Country, after tallying a total of 45 points.

In the individual event, Sporting CP's Rabah Aboud also finished second.

The Algerian led the pack for most of the 9,730m event, before being beaten to the top of the podium by Yemaneberham Crippa (Fiamme Oro Padova Club, Italy).

The result comes despite the absence of Hélio Gomes and Rui Pedro Silva and marks Sporting CP's return to podium sports of a competition already claimed by Alvalade on 14 occasions.

Patrícia Mamona wins Boston triple jump

Alvalade athlete again passes the 14m mark to claim gold in Boston

The Sporting CP athlete Patrícia Mamona was in brilliant form this week, winning the triple jump event in Boston's New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, as part of the World Indoor Tour.

Mamona's best jump was 14.01m, beating Nadia Eke (13.46m), Erika Kinsey (12.99m) and Tanasia Lea (11.78m). 

Licínio Pimentel 24th in Italica International Cross-Country

A total of six Alvalade athletes in action in Spain

Sporting CP's athletics department we in action in the Italica International Cross-Country event this week, covering 10 miles in Seville. Licínio Pimentel was Alvalade's top performer, finishing in 24th overall.

The other results for Sporting CP's athletes were: António Silva in 26th, Miguel Marques in 27th, Pedro Ribeiro in 29th and Youssef El Kalayin in 36th. Ricardo Mateus also took part, but was unable to finish.

Sporting CP coach Carlos Silva spoke with radio journalists at the end of the competition about his team's performance: "Our performance was for the most part a chance to see how everyone is doing. Everything went as expected and a few athletes did better than we thought they would. It was preparation and experience for us. I am happy with how everyone responded to the challenge."

World triple jump champion makes the move to Alvalade

Sporting's fans were treated to a a completely unexpected surprise at half-time against Tondela this Saturday, with president Bruno de Carvalho announcing the Portuguese Olympian Nélson Évora's signing for the club.

"I am really happy that Sporting CP believes in me. It is really special for me and I just want to thank everyone for this experience. This is proof that we want to compete for European titles and that is something that I will certainly be aiming to do. You can be sure that I will do my best", said Évora in an interview with the Sporting Journal at the final whistle.

Sporting Clube de Portugal statement

Clarification in relation to article published by O Jogo

In relation to a news piece published in the newspaper O Jogo today, Sporting Clube de Portugal clarifies the following:

1 – The governing structure of the club's Athletics Department has not been altered.

2 – Carlos Lopes, Olympic Champion in 1984, is the head of the Athletics Department, with Carlos Silva continuing as Technical Director.

3 – Without prejudice to the efforts of the current Board of Directors, building on the work by those responsible for the Athletics Department, namely Carlos Lopes and Carlos Silva, the Olympian Rui Silva has left Sporting CP and joined another club for family reasons.

4 – Sporting CP is saddened by Rui Silva's decision to leave the club, but thanks him for the dedication shown during his 20 years with the club. 

5 – Sporting CP wishes Rui Silva the best of personal success.

 

Irina Rodrigues finishes 6th in London

Alvalade athlete throws 58.14 in Diamond League discus competition

Irina Rodrigues finished the Diamond League discus competition in London in an admirable sixth place this weekend, with a distance of 58.14m in what was her last appearance ahead of Rio 2016.

The Alvalade athlete made her best distance on his first attempt, in a competition won by the Croatian world and European champion, Sandra Perkovic.
