National champion back in action on Friday in the 1,500m event

Salomé Afonso finished the World U20 Athletics Championships in an honorable 18th place this week, with a time of 2:08.09.

The Alvalade athlete shaved a second off her qualification time in a powerful pack of up and coming athletes.

Salomé Afonso will next be in action on Friday in the 1,500m and 4x100m events.

Alvalade athete claims 4th place in triple jump

The European triple jump champion, Patrícia Mamona, claimed an admirable 4th place finish in the Monaco stage of the Diamond League this week, with a distance of 14.24m. The distance was the best for a European competitor, in a competition won by the Colombian Caterine Ibarguen (14.96m).

Sara Moreira, Patrícia Mamona and Jéssica Augusto welcomed into the Order of Merit

The President of the Republic of Portugal awarded five of the national's athletes who had won medals in the European Athletics Championships with one of the country's highest honors. Included in the group if five were five Sporting athletes: Sara Moreira, Jéssica Augusto and Patrícia Mamona.

“The country is really happy right now and that is also due to your success. Independent of the economic, political and social problems we are going through, we should not let moments like this slip by without a celebration", affirmed Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, without hiding his expectations for the coming Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro: "I hope that in a few weeks time we will be giving awards to more athletes. It would mean that we are going through a unique period in our history."

Jéssica Augusto was one of the voices behind the awarding of of the Order of Merit to athletes after the national football squad was given the same honour. "I was joking when I said it would be hard for us to have two people at home given the award (the Sporting's athlete's partner, the goalkeeper Eduardo, received the award on Monday), but this medal is more than deserved."

It was also a fantastic day for Sara Moreira, who was overjoyed with the award: "It is an honour to be part of the Order of Merit especially after such a welcome at the airport."

The other gold medal winner at the ceremony, the triple jump hero Patrícia Mamona, is still loving the dream: "It was been a fantastic year and a great day. I am in the clouds right now and I still haven't come back down to earth."

Seocnd Alvalade athlete wins gold in Amsterdam

Patrícia Mamona won the gold medal in the triple jump competition at the European Championships this weekend, being held in the Dutch city of Amsterdam.

Following on from Sara Moreira's half marathon win, Mamona set a new national record on her final attempt (14.58m) to top the podium.

Sara Moreira and Jéssica Augusto win gold and bronze in Amsterdam

The Sporting athlete Sara Moreira topped the European Championships half marathon podium in Amsterdam this weekend, with a time 1:10.19.

The European champion was also accompanied in the medal positions by fellow Sporting athlete Jéssica Augusto, who finished in third with a time 36 seconds slower than Moreira.

Francis Obikwelu bids farewell to athletics

37-year old sprinter brings career to a close with final run in Amsterdam

Francis Obikwelu said his last goodbye to the international athletics track this Saturday, with one final showing in the 4x100m relay in event in the European Championships in Amsterdam.

Obikwelu arrived in Portugal in 1994, signing for Sporting two years later and going on to become one of the best sprinters in the world, under the coaching of Fausto Ribeiro.

In 2004 he claimed a silver medal in the 100m competition at the Athens Olympic Games, in what was Portugal's first medal in sprint competitions.

Cátia Azevedo has added her name to a lengthy list of Sporting athletes who will be in Rio 2016.

The Sporting runner smashed the national 400m record at the Madrid Meeting this week, securing an Olympic spot with a time of 51.63s.

Jéssica Augusto, Sara Moreira and João Vieira to feature in Olympics

Sara Moreira and Jéssica Augusto have been called up to the national Portuguese squad for the female marathon in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The Portuguese Athletics Federation also announced its squad for the male marathon and race walking events, while will see João Vieira take part in the 20km and 50km distances and Vera Santos named as a reserve.

Carlos Lopes overjoyed with ECC win

Carlos Lopes was understandably proud with Sporting's historic win in the European Champions Club Cup Track and Field this weekend in Turkey.

"The board has put a lot of investment into the athletics department. Sporting has deserved this trophy for a long time and it was a trophy that was missing from our museum. We worked really hard and everyone believed we could do it", said the Sporting athletics boss in an interview with Sporting TV, adding: "It wasn't as easy as it looked and we did slip up in places, but little by little we are building up a team that will bring us a lot of moments like this. We had already won this title in the male competition and our ladies had already finished second and third."
